Beau: I have been writing a 1,000 word column in the local eastern Jackson County newspaper every other Saturday for almost 25 years. I just finished No 534 last week. I write about legal issues but many have been about the interesting cases God has brought to me. I have been encouraged to write a book republishing some. Now that I am semi-retired I have no excuses. Sometimes it is a challenge to come up with a topic but God comes up with one. My initial goal was to show the readers that there are good lawyers who do good things and are ethical and honest. I also am able to share my faith. Almost weekly I get an email or oral encouragement.
I love what you are doing but recognized the challenges.
Beau - I've been enjoying your Substack, both your character that comes thru to me from your style AND the very worthwhile learnings I receive from your posts. Thank you! Will enjoy your exploring this new direction here.
On today's small joy - I determined some time back that I am gonna be THAT goofy old guy. A la the (apocryphal?) Kurt Vonnegut story about going to buy an envelope... "we're dancing animals!" I'm at core asocial but I've learned how to pass on a kind word when my better angels are at play. Few years ago at the food bank where I volunteered, a guy asked me what my job title was. I said, "ummm... I'm a volunteer, same as you." He said, "but you talk to EVERYbody." I smiled inside & out
Hi as a fellow writer with two books published I understand. I also started this past week writing my first substack article. It’s taken me a long time to decide what to write about. I just repost others posts to help them get their words out. I don’t have as many followers here as I do on Bluesky but that’s ok. I have been stuck working on my third novel in my series. I wrote my memoirs but never published them. And the gardening thing I had a huge garden (I have a farm 15 acres) I started small for a farm to get my bearing. My dad was an excellent farmer even in his small flower box bed in the front of my childhood farm. And every grew well. I had tomatoes for days. Be careful if you plant indeterminate tomatoes plants they never stop growing. At one point they were 5-6 feet. But the hornworms were for the task and the squash bugs numbered in the 1000s. I got a few dozen nice squash and tomatoes but the rest I planted got devoured by pests. And this year I planted nothing. Anyway get one indeterminate at the nursery and if you want take several stems and leaves off and you can plant them in soil and they will grow their own roots and thrive. I will say this I noticed my plants did better with afternoon sun and not morning sun and thrived. They don’t seem to like sun all day was my experience in Middle Tennessee good on the book and the tomatoes. If you got any questions hit me up. I wrote my second book in 16 weeks and it was a last. It was around 90k words spiritual fantasy around 348 pages. First book had more words less pages. I still haven’t figured that out. Keep writing for both of us….
Beau, I'm really drawn to your writing and excited to read your book. I have one in manuscript form entitled You and the Creator. Subtitled Discover the God Who Loves You Passionately. I've learned so much writing it. Enjoy your time writing.
I wish I could give you some sage advice on book writing, but I will say this: on a notebook where I write poetry and song ideas, I wrote on the cover a line I found helpful- “write what’s true”.
Thank you for how you’ve encouraged me with your writing.
I appreciate your honesty and transparency, Beau. And I love anything by Anne Lamott, especially Bird by Bird.
She’s a top tier writer, no doubt! Thanks for being here, Angie!
I have a feeling your pruning is going to bear fruit for all of us.
That’s so kind of you to say, Betty! Thank you!

I love the bravery to speak your truth. Thanks for that. We need more of it.
I’m excited to read your book! I also love these practices you’ve shared.
Thanks, Emily! Glad you enjoyed the practices. 😊

Tell us a story.
I wish I could give you some sage advice on book writing, but I will say this: on a notebook where I write poetry and song ideas, I wrote on the cover a line I found helpful- “write what’s true”.
Thank you for how you’ve encouraged me with your writing.
I can't wait for this book, Beau--I'm so grateful for your words here and in all the spaces. Peace of Christ to you.
