For a long time, I thought fiction was a waste of time. I thought to myself “Why read something that isn’t true?” or “Why spend hours with stories that never happened when there’s so much real-world work to be done?”
I didn’t say those things out loud, but I believed it. Deep down, I thought fiction was for people who had the luxury of escape, or who weren’t serious about faith.
And then... I started reading it. And everything changed.
What I found in those pages didn’t pull me away from reality. It brought me back to it. Fiction helped me rediscover parts of myself I had buried. It made me a better listener. More empathetic. A better father. A better follower of Jesus.
This week’s video is a personal reflection on how fiction slowly reshaped my spiritual life. I will talk about a couple of books that really challenged me, and I will also offer some recommendations for anyone who wants to start reading fiction again after a long time away.
